In the industrial inkjet sector, PE (Polyethylene) and PP (Polypropylene) are widely adopted for food packaging, cosmetic bottle bodies, pipes & cables, and electronic housings, thanks to their excellent chemical resistance and low cost. However, these plastics feature extremely low surface energy, far below the threshold required for effective wetting by UV inks. Drawing on practical application experience from LIONTEC, this article systematically outlines complete solutions to boost UV ink adhesion for PE/PP plastic marking with your UV Printing Machine.
PE/PP Plastic Adhesion Improvement
I. Substrate Surface Cleaning & Removal of Separating Contaminants
- Wipe the printing area with lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (anhydrous isopropanol) to remove mold release agents, oil stains and floating dust. Ordinary rags are prohibited to avoid secondary lint contamination.
- For film production lines, install high-pressure clean air knives for inline blowing cleaning.
- Do not touch the printed area with bare hands after cleaning, to prevent re-contamination of the substrate by grease from hands.
II. Select Suitable Surface Activation Pretreatment Solutions (Pick one based on working conditions)
- Corona treatment (first choice for continuous film and pipe production lines): Set power density at 0.5–3.0 W·min/m², and control electrode gap within 2–5 mm. Test with dyne pens after treatment to ensure surface energy ≥40 mN/m. Place corona equipment right before the marking station of your UV Printing Machine and print immediately after treatment.
- Plasma treatment (for irregular injection molded parts & complex workpieces): Low-temperature plasma bombardment completes surface cleaning and molecular activation simultaneously. Suitable for concave, convex and edged products. Workpieces directly go to the printing station after treatment, ideal for automated assembly lines of small & medium parts with your UV Printing Machine.
- Primer adhesion promoter (for small batches or lines hard to install corona/plasma units): Apply a thin, uniform layer of special polyolefin primer. Air dry naturally for 3–5 minutes, and print right after full drying. Avoid excessive primer coating; otherwise white fog marks will appear and ruin appearance when using your UV Printing Machine.
Flame treatment is NOT recommended for thin-wall plastic parts. Improper temperature control easily causes substrate deformation and burning.
III. Select PE/PP Compatible UV Ink & Match Printhead System
- Abandon general UV inks; choose modified UV inks specially developed for polyolefin materials.
- Maintain ink viscosity within the range required by the printhead of your UV Printing Machine.
- For white ink, pay attention to the light-blocking effect of pigments and moderately increase subsequent curing energy.
IV. Adjust Key Parameters of UV-LED Curing System
- Prioritize 395 nm UV-LED light sources to match photoinitiators in PE/PP dedicated UV inks.
- Perform gradient adjustment of curing energy within 80–150 mJ/cm². Insufficient energy leads to uncured, peelable ink layers; excessive energy causes brittle ink layers and thermal deformation of thin PE films.
- Arrange printheads and UV lamps properly. Deliver rapid light curing right after printing to prevent the ink layer from being scratched by production line fixtures of your UV Printing Machine.
V. Post-Printing Standard Adhesion Verification Test
Leave printed samples at room temperature for 24 hours for post-curing, then run two mandatory tests:
- Cross-cut tape test: Cut through the ink layer down to the substrate with a cross-cut knife. Rapidly peel off 3M 610 tape at 90°. Pass if no large-area peeling occurs on the grid.
- Alcohol rub test: Wet lint-free cloth with 95% alcohol, rub back and forth 50 times under 500g pressure. Pass if no fading or peeling of characters. During mass production, take samples every 2 hours to recheck adhesion and monitor performance fluctuations caused by batch variations of substrates.
Benefits of Adhesion Optimization
1.Guarantee Compliance for Product Traceability
The printed production dates, batch codes and QR codes are resistant to peeling. It meets traceability requirements for packaging, pipes and components, prevents blurred marks during transportation and storage, and lowers risks of customer complaints and product returns.
2.Compatible with High‑Speed Automated Production Lines
UV ink cures instantly. The combination of pretreatment and matched ink resolves smudging and tailing issues on PE/PP production lines. It is compatible with extrusion, filling and assembly lines without slowing down production cycle when using your UV Printing Machine.
3.Enhance Weather and Chemical Resistance of Marks
After process optimization, the ink layer passes cross‑cut, tape peel and alcohol rub tests. It withstands daily friction and contact with cleaning agents, and extends mark retention time for some outdoor products.
4.Reduce Overall Production Costs
Cut waste from defective coding, reduce frequent consumable replacement, and avoid high investment in laser marking. UV marking balances sharp print quality and mass production efficiency.
5.Broader Process Compatibility
The optimized process works for various polyolefin substrates including HDPE, LDPE, homo‑polypropylene, co‑polypropylene and modified PP parts. Enterprises can reuse the full marking solution for multiple plastic product lines.
